The Great Exchange

November 28, 2020 by Edith Parks

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9

How many times have you purchased something only to have to take it back to the store and exchange it for a different size, color, or something else entirely? Once you have made the exchange, the item is perfect for you to use or wear.

In addition to shopping exchanges, there are many exchanges we make in our lives: forgiveness for anger, broccoli for potato chips, keeping our mouths closed for saying what we are thinking, exercising for sitting on the sofa watching TV – the list goes on and on.

Not surprisingly, the Bible has many examples of exchanges. For me, there are two of great importance with eternal consequences.

First, Jesus exchanged the glories of heaven for life on earth. He left His Father and became a human. Why would the Creator of the universe do this? We read in Romans 3:23 “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” and in Romans 6:23, “the wages of sin is death.” God knew there was no way any of us could do anything, buy anything or be anything that would be an acceptable exchange for a relationship with Him and which would result in eternal life. So in His infinite wisdom, “He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Not only did Jesus exchange the glories of heaven for life on earth, He also exchanged His life for death on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus made this exchange knowing fully what it was going to cost Him. He said, “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11) Think what this exchange cost God – His Son for our sin!

The second exchange is the one that you and I can make – exchanging our unrighteousness for His righteousness. Acts 4:12 tells us, “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.” And the good news is that this exchange is free. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8) When we make this exchange, we are a “new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)  We have a personal relationship with God and will spend eternity with Him.

As we go through the days of Advent and prepare to celebrate Christmas, may we remember the greatest exchange of all and may that cause us to fall on our knees in thanksgiving and worship.

Cupcakes & Connections

February 28, 2020 by Edith Parks

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 1 John 4:11-12

Juanita is a cashier at my local grocery store. She is always upbeat, cheerful and smiling. Last year, we discovered that we live close to one another.
After praying and God’s nudging, I put two muffins in a bag – not just any bag, a Project Cupcake bag from Sweet Monday, and drove to Juanita’s house.

I found Juanita watering flowers on her back deck and told her she kept coming to mind as I prayed about who could use a bag of treats. I shared with her about Sweet Monday and Project Cupcake.
Juanita walked across her deck, sat down on the top step, and burst into tears. She looked at me and said, “Not five minutes ago, I was just thinking that I have a lot of acquaintances, but not any real friends and now you show up.”

By this time, my eyes were filled with tears. For the next hour, we sat at Juanita’s dining room table sharing sweet tea and muffins while Juanita shared her story with me.

I was reminded of what we say at Sweet Monday: “Women in our culture are busy, but they are often hurting and lonely.” This describes Juanita. Her life is busy with family and work, but she feels discouraged and disconnected.

As Juanita and I walked to the door, she suddenly stopped, grabbed my hands, and thanked God for hearing her prayers.

Who knew a sweet treat could transform a relationship – or a life? That’s the power of Project Cupcake, Sweet Monday’s inspired and inspiring 25th anniversary outreach project.

In celebration of 25 years of ministry, we invite you to help start a global movement to make the world a sweeter place by participating in Project Cupcake!

Click below to request your FREE Project Cupcake bags, pray about it, deliver a sweet treat to whomever God is leading, and watch your kindness be paid forward.

Project Cupcake is designed to open doors for women to develop and deepen relationships with friends, colleagues, and strangers (soon to be friends!) in their communities. Project Cupcake offers a sweet and tangible way to connect with each other with the love of Christ.

Crossing party lines and front lawns, women everywhere can carry cupcakes and connect women and their families to a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Could there be a more effective way to combat the sense of isolation and loneliness felt by so many people in our modern society?

There’s a Juanita in your life who needs you.

December 26, 2019 by Edith Parks

“Out with the old and in with the new.” How many times have we heard that as we begin a new year? With Jesus that is true, in Him we are new. We have received mercy and forgiveness and are righteous. His Holy Spirit lives in us.

As we write together this month, we will be remembering what it means to be new in Christ and how that is worked out in our lives.

Sign up below to receive your FREE January 2020 Sweet Scripture Writing Plan and follow us on Facebook and Instagram as we spend time together in God’s Word.

Praying Aloud – Simply Talking To God

July 2, 2019 by Edith Parks

Steve: “Edith, will you close us in prayer?”
Me: “No.”

I was 18 and in college attending a Bible study as a first time visitor. Steve finished the study and asked me to pray. I had never prayed out loud except for the blessing at family meals. I knew then and there that I needed to learn to pray out loud. Now you will find me ready to pray at any moment – at a Bible study, on the phone, in the parking lot, wherever anyone needs prayer.

Many of us are terrified to pray out loud. We panic and worry. What will I say? Will I use the right words? Do I need to use church/Bible language?

Praying out loud is simply talking to God. 1 Peter 3:12b says, “His ears attend to their prayer.” God wants to hear our prayers!!! He is not interested in church language and right words – He wants to hear what is on our hearts. So if you are unsure about praying out loud, here are some helps.

I have learned to block out everyone around me and to picture just me and God together as I pray.

Pray out loud in your quiet time. This will help you become comfortable in speaking prayers aloud.

Pray Scripture. You don’t have to come up with the words, simply pray the Scriptures inserting the people’s names for whom you are praying.

Use ACTS as your guide. Adoration – pray a reason you and others adore God. Confession – confess that you and others have sinned. Thanksgiving – thank God for forgiving you and for the many things He has done. (This is praise!) Supplication – simply list out the prayer requests that you have written down from the group – no need to elaborate.

Write out your prayer. Practice reading it out loud so that you are comfortable when time comes to pray.

Pause before you begin praying out loud. Ask God what He would have you to say. You will be amazed and blessed as He directs your words.

Include the group in your prayer time. Once prayer requests have been shared, ask someone to open in prayer (check with them beforehand) and then give people the opportunity to pray as they feel lead. Do not worry about silence. Then you close the prayer time.

Above all, remember that you are talking to your Friend who wants to hear your prayers.

Eternal Dividends

“There’s a Sweet Monday group in Charleston that I used to attend. I loved that group of ladies – they became my family when we moved here and I had no family close. I loved the fellowship and how easy it was to get to know all of them!” Sweet Cathey, Summerville, SC

“I had been asking God to give me a way to broaden my hospitality sphere to include women I don’t usually interact with. I was even going to try something like this but with a different ministry before I even knew about Sweet Monday, however, this one just seemed like more of what I was looking for.” Sweet Hollie, Marietta, PA

“I’ve been wanting to minister to women but have been trepidatious about it. This is the perfect, most perfect solution.” Sweet Julia, New Holland, PA

“In 2004 a friend and I hosted a Sweet Monday group in NJ and it was a great way to bring women from all age groups together. God has been nudging me to start one now in Texas.” Sweet Sue, Allen, TX
