Loving Our Neighbor

May 18, 2019 by Jennifer Russell

As a child in the suburbs of Virginia, I grew up knowing my neighbors, and they knew me. Regularly, I would walk through their yards to get to friends’ homes waving as I walked by, “Hello, Mr. Goff.”

“Hey there, Michael.” Mr. Goff always called the neighborhood kids by our parent’s names because he claimed we looked so much like our parents he couldn’t tell the difference. “How are the sisters and mom and dad?” He would make small talk as I stopped to chat for a few minutes, “Going to visit Judy and Dave?” Also not my friends’ names, but their parent’s names. “You girls stay out of trouble.”

Thirty years later, a walk through this neighborhood is filled with “No Trespassing” and “Private Property” signs. Waves to neighbors are sometimes met with a wave back, but not a lot of small talk and sometimes they’re ignored.

My neighborhood is similar. I notice as many of my neighbors return home from a day of work they quickly walk from their cars to their front doors trying not to make eye contact with anyone. On the occasions when I approach my neighbors to speak with them, I have noticed a sense of wonder on their faces as I walk toward them as if they are trying to figure out my motives before I speak.

Luckily I have broken down this wall with a few of my neighbors, and we go out of our way to say hello and even keep up with what is going on in each other’s lives. Unfortunately, nowadays, this is not the norm, and I would argue it takes a lot of work to accomplish.

No matter how hard it may be, we are called to this type of ministry — to “love our neighbor as ourself,” to “seek the good of others,” to “carry each other’s burdens,” to “show hospitality,” and to “value others above ourselves.”

Sweet Monday is a ministry that helps women do just that as they serve their local communities by inviting other women into their homes/churches/care facilities in the hopes of creating relationships that lead to connecting women to the life-changing gospel and then encouraging them to seek discipleship in the local church.

While this is the result we pray for in our ministry, there is so much more that I have seen Sweet Monday provide along the way. It has provided a supportive group of women to a woman in the midst of a divorce. It has provided refuge and rest to a woman carrying the heavy burden of being a caregiver for an aging parent. And it has provided friendships to many women who in their day-to-day lives feel so lonely in a broken world.

April Showers Bring New Hostesses!

May 1, 2019 by Jennifer Russell

It’s the beginning of May where we begin to see the outcome of that old saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” Here at Sweet Monday we have our “so-excited” faces on because we too have seen much growth in the month of April.

Three Sweet Monday socials had their first meetings in three new locations in April – Raleigh, NC, Greenwood, SC and Morganfield, KY. We are so excited to welcome the following new hostesses – Sweet Robin, Sweet Lori, Sweet Misty, Sweet Michelle, Sweet Jennifer and Sweet Lisa.

Robin and Lori hold their gathering the second Monday of the month in Raleigh, NC. Their first meeting theme was Java Jive, where they created a warm and welcoming coffee bar in Robin’s home. “We had a great time and look forward to May 13th!” said Robin.

Misty and Michelle also have their Sweet Monday the second Monday of the month in Greenwood, SC. At their first meeting they started “giving plates” with cookies and a short poem explaining the purpose of a giving plate, which is to enjoy the treat and pass it along to a neighbor.

Misty shared about their first meeting, “We had 21 ladies come from ages 18 to late 60s. It was a great atmosphere of laughter and love. We have had several women reach out with positive comments and overwhelming responses of gratitude. Looking forward to this new tradition in our neighborhood.”

Jennifer and Lisa’s Sweet Monday meets in Morganfield, KY. For their first meeting the theme was Jesus & Coffee, and they met at a local coffee shop.

Jennifer shared, “Lisa and I initially planned to host our Sweet Monday meetings quarterly as we didn’t want to ask the ladies to over commit their schedules, but all 8 ladies asked if we could have another Sweet Monday next month. They told us they don’t think we should have it quarterly, but we should have it monthly! Praise the Lord, He is so generous and has held this (and us) in His hands all the way.”

Welcome to our new hostesses and praise God for this month’s beautiful growth.

Sweet Succulents

April 19, 2019 by Jennifer Russell

I was first introduced to succulents a year ago. I still remember the first time I heard the word and thought, “What’s that?” So as not to appear clueless, I picked up my computer and did my research. A succulent is defined as any plant that stores water in leaves, stems, or both.

I was overwhelmed by all the things I found online about succulents. There were succulents planted in dishes for decorative centerpieces, succulent baby shower favors, succulent gardens made out of picture frames, etc.

In true Sweet Monday fashion, a succulent planted in a teacup.

Did you know there are classes on how to care for succulents? I even made the mistake of signing up to receive emails about succulents. Who knew they had enough information to email me more than once a week?

From the time I was first introduced to succulents, I knew I needed to incorporate them into one of my Sweet Monday themes. This month I was able to do that. The theme was spring related, and I decided to have my guests create a small succulent gift that could be given away for Easter.

I headed to my local garden center and picked up a pot with multiple succulents. This was the cheapest way to buy them at this particular store, so they ended up being less than $2 each. Then I replanted them in these cute mini tin buckets I had purchase a while back. I believe I bought them at Hobby Lobby, but I’ve seen them at Target and craft stores as well.

Tin party favor buckets.

I had a lot of scrapbook paper so this looked like the easiest craft I could find online. I also create these tags to cut out and put on the succulents. I always love it when I have the majority of what I need for my Sweet Monday just lying around the house.

The finished product.

The conversation among the ladies at my Sweet Monday about succulents was interesting. My older guests, who were not familiar with the word “succulent” were able to identify each plant by name. They talked about how they reminded them of their childhood homes and grandparents’ homes where these particular plants adorned the yard and porch. I was reminded of my own mother’s terracotta pot of succulents that sat on our back porch. My younger guests talked about the ease of caring for these unique plants and the many varieties you can purchase online.

I shared with the ladies some tips for caring for their succulent, like using coarse potting soil and a well draining container. If you plan to send your guests home with a succulent they will need to repot, separate a large bag of succulent potting soil into smaller take home bags.

Another tip is to give your succulents plenty of light and just the right amount of water. These and other tips are available online.

There are so many sweet and simple things to do with succulents and so many resources available. I hope you’ll find a new and fun way to use these plants in a future Sweet Monday.

Good News Girls

April 8, 2019 by Jennifer Russell

Good News Girl is the title of a devotion written by Sweet Monday founder Kim Newlen. I absolutely love this title because there is no greater identity I have than God’s Good News Girl and no greater task than sharing the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone around me.

During this month, we reflect on the life and death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and we celebrate His resurrection. He is risen, defeating sin and death, and therefore we must go and share the Good News with those who do not know Him.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

Are you a follower of Christ? Have you been transformed by the Holy Spirit? If yes, are you sharing that Good News with others? Are you actively seeking ways to show the love of Christ to those around you? Are you being intentional about developing relationships that will provide opportunities to share the Good News of the Gospel?

At Sweet Monday, we coach, train and provide resources to our hostesses around the world to help them serve their local communities by inviting other women into their homes to build healthy relationships and connect them to the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25

Sweet Monday Hostesses are also part of a large community of women, who through prayer partners, social media, events, online meetings and more are able to encourage and stir up one another in the mission of Reaching Women for Christ, One Sweet Invitation at a Time.

He is Risen therefore we must go! If you would like to learn more about becoming a Sweet Monday Hostess, visit Become A Hostess or Contact Sweet Monday.
